Guide

Start an Incident

Use the Start Incident wizard to declare the incident with enough context for responders to act.

Before you start

  • Know the incident title responders should see.
  • Know the current severity and environment.
  • Pick the impacted systems and functions if you already know them.

Do this

  1. Open Start Incident from the top navigation.
  2. In Basics, enter the incident title and choose the severity.
  3. In Impact, write the summary responders and stakeholders need first.
  4. Set the environment, assign the commander if known, and add labels only if they will help with routing or filtering.
  5. Select the impacted systems and functions you know now.
  6. In Confirm, check the title, summary, severity, commander, environment, and scope.
  7. Select Start Incident.

Check it worked

  • The incident opens in the command center.
  • The title, summary, severity, status, and environment are visible at the top of the page.
  • The impacted systems and functions match the scope you selected.

If it does not work

  • If Basics will not save, shorten the title and keep it specific.
  • If you do not know the exact scope yet, start with the affected system and refine it from the command center.
  • If the environment list is wrong, fix the catalog environments before you rely on them during response.
